What Is A Reverse Osmosis System?
Many of us have a vague recollection of learning about osmosis during high school biology or chemistry. Simply put, osmosis is the movement of molecules from a high concentration into an area of low concentration across a permeable membrane.
For example, imagine a fish tank divided vertically into two compartments by a thin, clear, plastic membrane. You fill one side of the tank completely to the top with just fresh water. On the other side, you add just salt water but only fill it half–way. The only thing separating the two compartments of water is the piece of very thin plastic. This plastic is dotted with billions of tiny holes that are large enough for water molecules to pass through them, but are too small for salt.
What you would find is that the water level on the salt water side will rise as water from the fresh water side moves through the membrane. This is because the water wants to find equilibrium between the two sides.
How Does A Reverse Osmosis System Work?
If osmosis is the movement of molecules from a high concentration into a low concentration area, then reverse osmosis must be the opposite. The way that reverse osmosis filtration systems work is that they use pressure to force molecules to move.
Consider our previous example of the fish tank. If we were somehow able to apply pressure to the salt water side, we would basically be able to separate the salt from the water. As we pressurized the salt water side, the salt would get blocked by the membrane and the water molecules would pass through into the fresh water side.
