Why Does My Home Smell Like a Sewer?

Is your home full of an awful stench for no apparent reason? It’s probably coming from your drains. Bad smells coming from drains are usually an indication of a problem with your drain and sewer system. How bad the problem is can be determined based on how strong the stench is, and the location it’s coming from. Read on to find out a bit more about this problem, as well as what it might take to fix it.

Individual Drains

If you’ve been able to track the source of the smells to one of the drains in your home, then there are a couple possible causes. First, you may have a dry p-trap. The p-trap is the bend in the pipes below your drain, which is designed to hold water at all times. This water barrier prevents smells and other unwanted things from coming back up through the drain system and into your home. If it’s been a while since you’ve used that drain, though, the water in the p-trap might evaporate and render it useless. Try running some water through the drain for a bit and see if that fixes the problem.

It’s also possible that waste has built up on the sides of the drain pipe, and begun to give off a stench. This is especially common with kitchen drains, which deal with food waste on a regular basis. If that’s the case, you’re going to need your drains cleaned.

Multiple Drains

If the stench is coming out of multiple drains in your home, you have a bigger problem. That usually indicates that you have an issue further down in your sewer line, or perhaps with the sewer vent on your roof. You’re probably going to need sewer cleaning in order to get rid of the problem.
