Of all the various problems that can afflict your home, plumbing problems are probably among the worst. Even a small amount of water damage can end up costing quite a bit to repair, depending on the location. This also happens to make slab leaks among the worst plumbing problems out there. Let’s take a look at slab leaks, why they’re such a problem, and what you can do about them.
What Is a Slab Leak?
Your house sits on a concrete foundation, called a “slab,” which helps to stabilize it and prevent it from shifting. Under this slab there are a number of plumbing pipes, most notably your water and sewer lines. A slab leak is when one of these lines develops a leak. The water from the leak then travels up through the slab and into your home, often coming up from under your floor.
There are two reasons that this is such a big problem. First, slab leaks can be quite large and cause widespread damage. Second, because of their location these leaks often go unnoticed until the damage is already done. It is very difficult to identify a slab leak before it’s had the chance to cause extreme damage.
What to Do About It
There are three things you need to do as soon as you suspect a slab leak. First, turn off your water immediately. That should mitigate further damage to your home while you get the problem fixed. Second, call for slab leak detection services. Some professional plumbers have specialized leak detection equipment, which they can use to identify the slab leak’s location. Third, get the leak fixed as soon as possible. The longer it takes to fix the issue, the worse it will get.
