Your water line is the pipe that runs from the city water main to your home’s plumbing system. All water that you use flows through the water line to get to you. So it’s a pretty good idea to make sure that your water line is in good condition at all times. There are a number of water line issues that you need to be aware of, some of which are common to other plumbing areas and some of which are unique. Let’s take a look at those issues now.
Tree root structures extend far beyond the visible part of the tree, some of them for tens of yards. As a tree root expands outwards, looking for water, it can come across your water line and bore into it. Once the root has penetrated the water line, it will begin to grow. Eventually, the water line can become so overgrown with tree roots that the flow of water through it is reduced to a trickle. You need to make sure that you have your water line inspected every few years, to make sure that it hasn’t been infiltrated by a network of tree roots.
If you have a lime scale in your home, you can protect against it by installing a water treatment system. However, this doesn’t protect your water line. Lime scale can still build up in the water line, outside the protection of a water treatment system, forcing it to be cleaned out or replaced. If you want to protect your water line from lime scale, make sure that it’s properly inspected every couple of years.
