The water line is the pipe that runs from your home’s plumbing system to the city water supply, or to your well if you use one. All water that your home uses passes through this pipe, which means that it’s more than a little important that you keep your water line in ideal condition. If your water line starts to degrade or experience other problems, it will have a negative impact on the rest of your plumbing system. With that in mind, here are some signs that you may need to install a new water line.
Puddles
If a leak or rupture occurs in your water line, the water that escapes the pipe will often rise up through the soil and form pools in the yard. If you have pools of water mysteriously appearing in your front or back yard, it may be that you have a major leak in your water line. If that happens, you may need to replace it.
Loss of Water Pressure
Loss of water pressure could mean a couple of different things. It’s possible that you have a tree root problem, where an entire root structure has penetrated and grown into your water line. A little bit of tree root growth can be removed fairly easily, but if the root growth is quite advanced then it is better to just replace the entire pipe.
It’s also possible that lime scale has formed in your water line as a result of long-term exposure to hard water. If that is the case, it can often mean that you need to replace the line. If you catch the scale early enough, it can be cleaned out. Too late, however, and the scale will harden and become impossible to remove.
