Pedestal vs. Submersible: The Different Types of Sump Pumps

If you are concerned about excess moisture in your home gathering in the basement, or you have worried about flooding damage due to a broken pipe or other plumbing accident, you should give serious consideration to calling a professional plumber to install a sump pump. Sump pumps remove water that gathers in a central pit (the sump) in a basement or other area of a home and then use impeller pumps to place it the wastewater system or a well. The Sunny Plumber has team members experienced with installing and servicing sump pumps in Glendale, AZ, so give them a call when you think it’s time to have a sump pump put into your home.

You will have to consider what type of pump to install. Your plumbing professional will help you make the best choice. There are two basic models you will consider, pedestal and submersible sump pumps

Pedestal sump pumps

These sumps pumps are placed above the sump on a—you guessed it—pedestal. A pipe runs from the sump pump down into the sump, and the motorized impeller pump draws the water up into the unit. Pedestal pumps are easy to service since they are not down in the water, and they will usually last for many years without major issues. However, they tend to use more power than submersible pumps and are not in general as energy efficient.

Submersible sump pumps

Just as the name implies, a submersible pump is placed down in the sump itself, submerged in the water. The impeller pumps draws water directly into the unit through intake valves, and the pump then pushed the water out through a pipeline leading from the sump. Submersible pumps consume less energy to do their job. However, they can suffer from more repair needs because of the continual presence of water, and they are a bit trickier to service.

Unless you are a plumbing professional, it’s difficult to determine which type of sump pump is ideal for your home.
