How You can Tell if Your Water Line is in Trouble

The water line in your home serves an important purpose: transporting all of your fresh water from either a well or the municipal water main into your plumbing system. So it is obviously a good idea to make sure that this pipe is kept in good condition. Water lines are designed to be resilient, and most can last between 80 and 100 years under the right circumstances. However, there are a number of ways that your water line can get into trouble. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that your water line probably needs repair.

Drops in Water Pressure

Large leaks or ruptures in the water line are a serious threat, especially if allowed to develop over a long period of time. One way to tell whether or not you have a large leak in your water line is to monitor the water pressure in your home. If your water pressure is decreasing throughout the house, it may be because you have a leak in your water line.

Pooling Water

Most people have their water line running under their front or back yard. When the water line develops a leak, the water tends to push upwards and start forming pools in the yard. If you notice strange pools of water starting to form on your property, and they don’t seem to be coming from any obvious source, it is quite possible that you have a leak in your water line. If the pools are large, or there are a great many of them, you may have a serious rupture in your water line. You should call for repairs right away to limit the damage as much as possible.
