Drains occupy an unusual role in your home. They are responsible for removing all kinds of waste, keeping your home clean and sanitary, yet you very likely don’t spare much of a thought for them until they develop problems. Fortunately, if you catch these problems early enough you’ll be able to avoid many of the more serious repairs that are sometimes necessary. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need drain cleaning.
Slow Drainage
Drain clogs don’t form all at once. Instead, they begin when detritus sticks to the inner walls of the pipe and builds towards the center. As the blockage gets closer and closer to becoming a full clog, it restricts the flow of water through the pipe. This causes the drain to drain more slowly than it normally does. If you notice your drain taking longer and longer to drain, you should schedule cleaning before a clog develops.
Bad Smells
Bad smells coming up through your drain can be caused by a number of different things. Most commonly, though, they are the result of waste getting stuck in the drain pipe. This very often occurs in kitchen drains, where fats and oils can congeal and stick to the walls of the pipe. If you have bad smells coming up through one of your drains, a thorough drain cleaning should fix it.
Clogs
This one is pretty hard to miss, as a clogged drain will much prevent you from using whatever appliance it serves. As mentioned above, clogged drains are the result of a buildup of waste in the pipes. In most cases, a high-pressure scour jetting should be enough to wash the clog down the pipes to the sewer. If that doesn’t work, a drain snake can be used.
