How Lime Scale Forms in Your Home

Have you ever noticed a white, chalky substance building up around the head of a faucet or on the walls of a shower? That substance is known as lime scale, and it’s quite a bit more of an issue than simply being unsightly. Lime scale can actually be quite damaging to your home, specifically to the pipes in your home. If not dealt with properly, it can even cause a need to replace your pipes. Read on to find out more about how lime scale forms in your home, and what to do about it.

Hard Water

Hard water is the name for water with a mineral content that is higher than normal. It is very common in areas across the country. As hard water flows through the pipes in your home, it deposits small amounts of minerals on the walls of each pipe. Over time, these mineral deposits grow into lime scale. Lime scale can form anywhere that is frequently exposed to hard water, which is why you may occasionally notice it in your sink or shower.

Problems Associated with Lime Scale

The biggest danger with lime scale is that it can grow so large as to block the flow of water through the pipes. If it is caught early enough, the lime scale can be scraped out of the pipes before this happens. However, oftentimes the lime scale becomes so entrenched that it cannot be removed without irreparably damaging the pipe. At that point, the pipe will need to be replaced anyway.

The best way to solve the lime scale problem is to install a water softener in your home. A water softener is a device that sits in your water line, and filters out all of the minerals that can cause lime scale. In this way, you can protect your home’s pipes against hard water.
