Don’t Let These Items Go Down the Kitchen Sink Drain!

plumberAre you playing host to the family this season? Even if you aren’t, you may be having friends over some time in the future. When people are going to be spending time at your house, there is a lot of activity that will go on in the kitchen. So what can you do to ensure that your kitchen plumbing in Phoenix is kept safe?

This might sound silly at first, but hear us out. One of the best things you can do is make sure everyone is on the same page about what NOT to put down the kitchen drain. Write it down on a note and paste it next to or close by the sink so everyone can see it.

What are the items not to try to wash down the kitchen drain? Those “no-go” items include…

Fats, Oils, and Grease

These may seem harmless when they are hot and in liquid form. However, fats, oils, and grease all cool down and congeal quickly. When this happens, these substances, also known as FOG, are going to stick to your drain walls and create the beginnings of a clog.

Bones and Fruit Pits

Other things that shouldn’t go down the drain are bones or fruit pits. It isn’t hard to imagine why, since bones and fruit pits are hard and may even damage your pipes. These items will, first, wreck your garbage disposal, and second, will easily stick around in your drain and create a clog.

Coffee Grounds, Eggshells, and Rice

It may seem harmless to put coffee grounds, eggshells, or rice down the drain. The problem with these food items is that they are going to be big sources of clogs. Coffee grounds and eggshells easily stick to your drain walls while rice can stick to the drain and expand when wet. This debris is better off being thrown away or even tossed into the garden for fertilizer so it won’t cause trouble in the drains.

Fibrous Fruit and Vegetable Peels

Lastly, make sure not to let harder fruit and vegetable peels get down your drain. Peels like the ones from cantaloupes, watermelons, avocados, potatoes, and more are bad for both your garbage disposal and your drain. These peels aren’t going to cooperate with your disposal and will also create drainage issues for your kitchen sink.
